How
does the scoring work!?
The
scoring system has changed for 2010. Whilst it still works on the same premise
as previously the parameters have been tightened and added factors introduced.
This will achieve a better balance between those who are out there giving their
best every week, but not improving much and those that are trying to
systematically improve each week. Your first run sets your base or benchmark
time and points are therefore awarded from the second run.
Improvement
points are calculated based on variable factors such as distance, gender and a
number of time parameters. Another factor, thanks to a brilliant suggestion
from a fellow corporate cup participant, is a new bonus point system designed
to encourage continued participation. The bonus awarded increases the more
often you participate and will decrease if you do not! The points awarded each
week will be the total of the improvement points and the bonus points and then
capped to a maximum.
Generally, the improvement points system can be regarded as working on a
sliding scale. The points are awarded according to an inverse exponential
equation. Each run time has an equivalent point score. The 2 run times are
plotted and the difference on the point scale becomes the calculation. Therefore
there is an optimum improvement based on the variable factors above. Generally,
the faster you run the harder it is to improve on time, so in this scheme, the
faster the runner, the less time in seconds needed to gain points. For example,
a runner improving from 30 min to 29 min (60 seconds improvement) may get the same
points as one improving from 20min to 19.30 min (30 seconds improvement) and
one improving from 40 min to 35min (300 seconds improvement) would get less
points as the improvement is too large. It is generally easier to gain points
at the beginning stages.
The Team Points are then calculated for each fortnight and the team
total is the best 5 point scores of the seven runners within the team.
Please remember that whilst the points system adds an element of
excitement and challenge, the true spirit of the Corporate Cup is to get out
there each and every week, have some fun
with your team mates, and to give it your best to reach and challenge your
goals and fitness.
